A Big Year for Sony Pictures

It’s been a very busy year for our client Sony Pictures Releasing.  We’ve worked on some fabulous films and had some great fun on movie tours promoting these films throughout Queensland.

Earlier this year we saw Dame Maggie Smith, a two-time Oscar® winner, recreating one of her most celebrated roles – the singular Miss Shepherd – in TriStar’s THE LADY IN THE VAN, Alan Bennett’s big-screen comedic adaptation of his own iconic memoir and honoured stage play.  This little gem of a film was extremely popular with the seniors market.

We finally found out why the birds were so angry, when the 3D animated comedy, THE ANGRY BIRDS movie hit our screens in early May.  This fun family film featured an all-star voice cast that included Bill Hader, Maya Rudolf and Peter Dinklage (for Game of Thrones fans).

Hollywood Superstars George Clooney and Julia Roberts hit the big screen in the edge of your seat thrilled MONEY MONSTER.  Clooney starred as financial TV host Lee Gates and Roberts as his ace producer Patty, who are put in an explosive situation when an irate investor who has lost everything forcefully overtakes their studio.   This high-stakes thriller is a definite must see if you missed it on the big screen.

Thirty years after the original film took the world by storm, we saw the return of GHOSTBUSTERS – fully rebooted for a new generation and with an all female cast.  This fun film starred our most popular female comedians of the moment – Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.  It also starred Australia’s man of the moment Chris Hemsworth.

We were delighted with the release of THE SHALLOWS in August.  Shot entirely in Australia, with most of the filming and production taking place at Warner Roadshow Movie World Studios on the Gold Coast, Blake Lively shone in her role as Nancy who was attacked by a great white shark and stranded just a short distance from the shore. THE SHALLOWS received fabulous reviews and is now known as “The best shark movie since Jaws.”

The Sony Pictures Releasing team had fun withe release of local production SPIN OUT which was co-written and co-directed by one of Australia’s most favourite comedians – Tim  Ferguson.  Star tours took place throughout the country with ute muster fans coming from everywhere to see this romantic comedy that gave audiences a true taste of country Australia.

It’s been a long time since a good old western was shown on the big screen and this year, the remake of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN was huge hit with audiences and starred an all-star cast that included Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke,
Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee  and Peter Sarsgaard.

Tom Hanks starred in INFERNO the latest bestseller in Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code, billion-dollar Robert Langdon series. Directed by Academy Award® winner Ron Howard we saw the famous symbologist (Hanks) on a trail of clues tied to the great Dante himself.

To finish the year, we’ve just seen Kate Beckinsale as the vampire Selena return to the big screen in the fifth instalment of the popular Underworld series – UNDERWORLD : BLOOD WARS.

With another big year ahead in 2017, we’ll post updates on what’s coming up early in the New Year.
